B.J. Bates, 33, of White Hall, died Saturday, June 23, 2012.

He was born December 3, 1978 in Pine Bluff, son of Billy Bates and Sherry Laney Baxter. B.J. was reared and received his early education in Star City and Pine Bluff.

He was a member of Calvary’s Lighthouse. B.J. loved baseball, golf, his church and his family. He loved to coach baseball. B.J. coached Little League with three different teams including White Hall Little League All-Stars in 2005, Wholesale Tire from 2006-2008 and Cranford Funeral Home from 2010-2011. He coached Babe Ruth with Simmons First National Bank from 2010-2011.

He was also a very experienced and successful golfer. He won second place in the 13th Annual AFT-SFC Golf Tournament in 2008, second place in the First Flight of the Second Annual Monte Coleman Celebrity Golf Classic and won First Flight Roy Lewallen Memorial Golf Tournament in 2009

B.J. was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Selbey Laney; paternal grandparents, Herman and Mattie Bates; and step-father, Bob Greer.

Survivors include his wife, Tonia Holloway Bates, whom he married March 25, 2006 in Eureka Springs; two sons, Dillon and Jaxon Bates of White Hall; daughter, Truli Bates of Jacksonville; mother and step-father, Sherry and Johnnie Baxter of Pine Bluff; father and step-mother, Billy and Teresa Bates of Conway; sisters, Tricia Schmidt of Siloam Springs and Nicole Williams Davis of Jonesboro; brother, Ben Bates of Norfolk, Va.; and step-siblings, Jonathan Greer, Erin Weidemann, Erin Baxter, April Ryburn, Brandy Eason and Jason Ryburn.

A memorial visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Robinson’s.

A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Calvary’s Lighthouse with Bro. Sammy Alverson officiating.
