Dollarway tops Rison on diamond

MONTICELLO — Henry Murphy struck out six in four innings and also lined two hits in leading Dollarway to a 2-1 baseball victory over Rison on Saturday.

John Reed had an RBI double to give the Cardinals the lead.

Dollarway will play at Clinton on Thursday to open 2-4A Conference play.

Henderson takes series from UAM

ARKADELPHIA — Arkansas-Monticello suffered a pair of baseball losses to Henderson State on Saturday to give the Reddies a 2-1 series win.

Henderson State won 3-2 in the first game and 3-1 in the second game Saturday.

With Saturday’s losses, UAM drops to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in the Great American Conference. HSU improves to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the GAC.

Blossoms split with Gorillas

MONTICELLO — The Arkansas-Monticello softball team split a non-conference double header with Pittsburg State on Saturday at home, winning the first game 5-4 in eight innings followed by a 7-3 loss in the second half of the twin bill.

Randa Perry (7-4) earned the first-game win in complete-game fashion, allowing four runs (three earned) off nine hits with seven strikeouts and five walks for UAM (15-7).

In the second game, the Gorillas (3-3) pounded out 14 hits for three runs in the third, two runs in the fourth and one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings.


Trojans turn back Red Wolves

LITTLE ROCK – Trailing 50-40 with less than 13 minutes to play, UALR (17-14, 11-9 Sun Belt Conference) used a 16-0 run to take its first lead of the game and never looked back, as the Trojans capped their regular season with a 78-71 win over Arkansas State (18-11, 12-8) on Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center. The win gives UALR a 13-3 home record on the year, tying it with the 2007-08 UALR team for the most wins at the Jack Stephens Center in a single season.

In a game that featured 59 fouls and seven technical fouls, UALR was outrebounded 34-to-28, but finished with a 24-to-6 edge in points-in-the-paint and an 18-to-8 lead in points off turnovers. The Trojans committed just ten turnovers while forcing the Red Wolves into 16 on the night.

Freshman John Gillon led UALR with a career-high 24 points on a 15-of-18 effort at the foul line. The Red Wolves’ Marcus Hooten led all scorers on Saturday with 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting.

UALR won the women’s game over A-State 58-50.
