Star City edges Monticello

MONTICELLO — Star City’s Blake Wynn hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning and held Monticello to just one run in the top of the seventh to defeat the Billies 5-4 Monday night.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jackson Haynes single and Zach House doubled to put runners at second and third. Wynn’s single broke a 3-3 tie and gave Star City (3-4, 1-1 in 8-4A) the eventual win.

With the bases loaded In the top of the seventh, Star City’s Austin Powell earned the save after giving up an RBI sacrifice fly and then a groundout back to the mound.

House pitched 6 1/3, allowing three earned runs on nine hit with six strikeouts and four walks and was credited with the win.

Powell hit a three-run home run in the third inning that put the Bulldogs ahead, 3-2.

Stary City will play at Warren on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Curtis lifts Stuttgart past Southside

BATESVILLE — Stuttgart’s Jon Curtis racked up five RBIs on three hits as the Ricebirds defeated Batesville Southside 13-0 in five innings on Monday.

Curtis hit a home run in the second. He also singled in the first and fifth inning. On the mound, Curtis gave up just three hits with eight strikeouts.

Stuttgart scored three runs in the first, eight in the second and two in the third. They combined for 14 hits.

UAPB baseball game postponed

GRAMBLING, La. — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball team tried to get in the final game of the three game series on Sunday, but the rain prevailed.

The Tigers and the Golden Lions were in the fourth inning when play was called. UAPB led 6-5 at the time. A make-up date has not yet been set but the two teams will play again at the Torii Baseball Complex in Pine Bluff later this season.
