PARAGOULD — Monticello’s season came to an end Tuesday with a 54-46 loss to Forrest City in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament.

The Billies finished the 2012 campaign with a 15-12 record. Torry Butler led Monticello with 24 points. Randy Stanley finished with 11.

Forrest City led 10-8 after the opening period and 26-22 at the half before Monticello outscored the Mustangs 13-7 in the third period to take a 35-33 advantage into the fourth. But Forrest City exploded for 21 points in the final stanza to secure the win and advance to play the winner of Greenwood and Central Arkansas Christian.

Monticello coach Wayne Sherrer said the Mustangs outdueled the Billies on the low post late in the game.

“They beat us on the glass,” Sherrer said. “That’s where they killed us. … The kids played hard tonight. That is indicative of the whole year. We had a very young group. In spite of our youth, they came through and got a state tournament berth. We bring back nine people for next year, so the future looks bright for this group.”
