Arkansas-Pine Bluff landed an in-state recruit and Mississippi prep standout for its men’s basketball team next season.

The team announced Thursday that Des Arc small forward Trent Whitting and Gulfport, Miss., shooting guard Trent Jeffries signed letters of intent with the Golden Lions. Whitting’s signing now gives the Lions four players from the Natural State expected to be on the 2012-13 roster, joining Watson Chapel graduate Daniel Broughton, Marion’s Marcel Mosley and Helena-West Helena’s Edward Buford.

Whitting (6-feet-6, 210 pounds) averaged 17 points and 8 rebounds per game for Des Arc, which reached the 2A East Regional tournament this past season. Whitting also blocked 3 shots per game.

The Lions have lost SWAC scoring champion Savalace Townsend to graduation, but they found another scorer from near Townsend’s hometown of Long Beach, Miss., to join the rotation at guard. Jeffries scored 17.5 points per game, tallied 3.8 assists and made 5.1 rebounds per game for Gulfport this past season.

Six players from this season’s UAPB team have completed their eligibility. UAPB finished 11-22, falling to eventual SWAC champion Mississippi Valley State in the conference tournament.
