While the Golden Lions slowed down in the second half, the game was never really in doubt as UAPB beat Grambling State 68-53. The Golden Lions (9-21, 8-9 in the SWAC) moved up to fifth in the conference.

UAPB was on fire in the first half and shot 50 percent from the field on 12-of-24 shots and hit 8-of-10 attempts from the free-throw line. The Golden Lions also hit three of their six three-pointers.

On the other end, Grambling State (3-23, 3-13) shot only 26.9 percent on 7-of-26 shooting, including just 2-of-9 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc.

UAPB did not shoot as well in the second half, but had the benefit of a 14-point lead. The Golden Lions shot 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from the field in the second half, but still outscored Grambling State 33-32 after the intermission.

Grambling State shot 43.5 percent in the second half on 10-of-23 attempts, but hit only 1-of-5 from three-point range. Grambling State did go 11-of-15 (73.3 percent) from the free-throw line, but UAPB went 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the charity stripe in the second half.

Savalace Townsend, the SWAC’s leading scorer, poured in a game-high 19 points on 5-of-15 shooting for the Golden Lions. He added six rebounds, four steals and three assists as he played all 40 minutes in the win.

Lazabian Jackson and Mitchell Anderson scored 16 points each for UAPB. Anderson also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists in 38 minutes. Jackson hit five of his seven three-point attempts. Jamar Harris had eight points and eight rebounds. At the free-throw line, Townsend and Anderson both went 8-of-9.

For Grambling State, Quincy Roberts scored a team-high 14 points, but hit just three of his 17 shots. Xavier Rogers came off the bench to score 10 points.

Grambling State 84, UAPB 56

Grambling State beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 84-56 Monday, but statistics were not available.

The win ties Grambling for fourth in the SWAC with a 9-7 conference record and are 13-13 overall. UAPB falls to 1-27 and 1-16 in the SWAC.
