MONTICELLO — Arkansas-Monticello upset No. 20-ranked Central Oklahoma 72-57 Saturday to wrap up the UAM Hampton Inn Classic in women’s basketball.

It was almost a wire-to-wire victory for the Cotton Blossoms (3-2), who trailed only 9-8 with 16:11 left in the first half. They led 35-26 at halftime.

UAM capitalized on 27 Central Oklahoma turnovers, converting them to 23 points. The Blossoms hit 5 of 10 3-point baskets and shot 43 percent (23 of 53) from the field for the game.

For UAM, Chelsea Johnson scored 18 points, Channon Haywood totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Ariel Billington had 12 points.

In Saturday’s first game, Ouachita Baptist beat New Orleans 78-43.

The Blossoms will host another classic Friday and Saturday with Dr. Mary Jane Gilbert Classic, when Arkansas-Fort Smith, Southern Arkansas and Northeastern State (Okla.) pay a visit.

Weevils pull away from Eagles

MONTICELLO — A game that was tight for most of the first half turned into an Arkansas-Monticello rout, as the Boll Weevils beat the Shepherd Tech Eagles 97-59 Saturday in men’s basketball for their fourth straight victory.

UAM (5-1) went on a 12-4 run to end the first half leading 40-27. The lead slowly climbed in the second half, to 74-52 with 6:59 remaining and to 84-52 with more than 5 minutes to play.

L.A. Farmer scored a game-high 26 points to lead UAM, with Ricardo Hall chipping in 22, Kori Forge 17 and Sergio Crowe 15. A.J. Calhoun grabbed 12 rebounds for the Weevils.
