WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Arkansas-Monticello turned in a defensive gem against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday, as the Boll Weevils beat the Bulldogs 65-54.

Arkansas-Monticello, which had beaten SWOSU earlier this season, improved to 16-8 overall and 6-6 in the Great American Conference. The Boll Weevils were led by Sergio Crowe with 21 points.

SWOSU (13-10, 4-9 GAC) carried a 21-20 lead into the halftime break, but the second half started all in UAM’s favor. The Boll Weevils scored the second half’s first basket which turned out to be the go-ahead points when Kori Forge swished a three-pointer 21 seconds in putting UAM up 23-21.

The Bulldogs remained within striking distance when Howe canned a long-distance shot, cutting UAM’s lead to 31-30 with 14:54 to play. SWOSU would get no closer.


SWOSU 72, UAM 52

Southwestern Oklahoma State got itself back on the winning track in convincing fashion with a 72-52 win in women’s action.

The win, SWOSU’s first in a five-game span, improved the Bulldogs to 14-9 on the year and kept them in third place in the Great American Conference with a 9-4 league mark. Arkansas-Monticello dropped to 12-11 and 5-8 with the loss.

The game was close for the first 30 minutes as the lead changed hands six times and the score was tied seven others.

The Cotton Blossoms finished the game making 19-of-53 attempts for 36 percent. UAM was just 1-of-11 from three-point distance for nine percent and 13-of-16 for 81 percent from the line.
