UAM is currently 4-4 with a 1-3 record in the Great American Conference. The Boll Weevils will play Delta State, a former Gulf South Conference rival which is currently 2-4 overall, today for the second time this season.
On Nov. 20, UAM outscored Delta State 31-20 in the second half to capture a 51-48 road victory at Walter Sillers Stadium in Cleveland, Miss. Senior Kori Forge led the Boll Weevils with 20 points, following an 8-of-18 shooting performance from the field. Forge also added five rebounds, five assists and two steals to his final totals.
Junior Dayton Mickens chipped in with 11 points.
Delta State is currently riding a two-game losing streak, following a 57-50 loss to Miles College in Birmingham, Ala. Senior forward Terry Leake Jr. led Delta State with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Cornel Knight contributed with 10 points.
In UAMís last game, the Boll Weevils rallied back from a deficit of 14 points in the second half to get within two points for a 65-63 loss to Ouachita Baptist at home.
UAM used an 11-3 scoring run midway through the second half to trim a 12-point deficit to just four points with 5:20 remaining in regulation. Just over 20 seconds later, junior Ramon Mejia nailed a three-pointer to put the Tigers up by just three points with less than 5 minutes remaining.
UAM made just 3 of 9 foul shots in the first half, but improved to 10 of 17 in the final period. As a team, UAM shot 38 percent from the field and 21 percent on the three-pointers.
OBU shot 50 percent from the field, 56 percent on three-pointers and 57 percent on foul shots.
Forge led UAM with 20 points, marking his sixth game of the season to reach the 20-point plateau. Senior A.J. Calhoun and Mickens also reached double digits in scoring with 10 points each. Mickens added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Forge leads the team with 21.5 points per game. He also has 28 assists on the year with 14 steals. Calhoun leads the team with 60 rebounds or 7.5 per game.
Last season, UAM finished 21-9 with a 10-6 record in conference. The Boll Weevils lost in the second round of the GAC Basketball Tournament against Southwestern Oklahoma State 79-76.
