LAKE CHARLES, La. — A baserunning error on an RBI hit and strikeout ended Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s chances of defeating McNeese State in a three-game series opener Friday night.
McNeese State earned its first victory of the season, 2-1, getting the two big outs after Rafael Soto singled to right field to score Dylan Calhoun. On that same play, Isias Alcantar was thrown out at third base by the right fielder for the second out.
Cody DeMera then struck out looking to end the game.
UAPB (2-4) had trailed 1-0 for the first seven innings, then fell behind 2-0 in the eighth. The Golden Lions were outhit 7-5, while each team committed an error.
Dwayne Hysmith batted 2 for 4 to lead the Lions. Starter Kyle Schwartz (1-1) allowed the two earned runs on seven hits, struck out three and walked one in 7 1/3 innings. Andrew Buehler threw a hitless one-third.
Bryce Kingsley (1-1) fanned 10 and held UAPB to three hits in 7 2/3 innings for the win.
Game 2 will be contested at 3 p.m. today, with the finale set for 1 p.m. Sunday
