The Southwestern Region Area 1 Meeting of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. will be held in Pine Bluff starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7.


The event will be held at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church. The host chapter is Alpha Chi Sigma Pine Bluff Alumnae Chapter.


A community service presentation to YouthPartners will be held at 10:30 a.m.


“We have partnered with YouthPartners of Pine Bluff/Jefferson County to help combat childhood illiteracy by donating hundreds of books to their cause,” according to a news release.


Several of members are alumni of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.


Sigma Gamma Rho was established Nov. 12, 1922, at Butler University at Indianapolis, Indiana.


The membership is more than 85,000 with five regions — Central, Northeastern, Southeastern, Southwestern, Western.


The Southwestern Region is comprised of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.


“Area 1 of the Southwestern Region and the Pine Bluff Alumnae Chapter look forward to connecting with the citizens of Pine Bluff on Oct. 7 and sharing additional information about our upcoming events and programs,” according to the release.


The Area 1 Coordinator is J’onnelle Colbert-Diaz. The Pine Bluff Alumnae Chapter President is Jessica Hickman. The Area 1 meeting hostesses are Evelyn Yates and Wanquita Nettles.
