The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s Spring 2018 commencement will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in the Pine Bluff Convention Center Arena. The free event is open to the public.

The featured speaker will be Johnny C. Taylor Jr., president and chief executive officer of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). According to a news release, the agency is the world’s largest human resource professional society.

Taylor is the immediate past president and chief executive officer of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The fund represents nearly 300,000 students attending public historically black colleges and universities.

“In this role, he became a prolific fundraiser, amassing over $100 million in grants and gifts. As an influencer in his field and community, he was named one of the Ebony Magazine ‘Power 100’ in 2011,” according to the release.

President Trump appointed Taylor chairman of the President’s Advisory Board on Historically Black Colleges and Universities in a 2018 White House ceremony, according to the release.

“Additionally, he is currently serving on the corporate board of Gallup, the leader in organizational consulting and public opinion research, a member of the board of trustees of the University of Miami and an adviser to Safe Streets & Second Chances, an initiative to reduce the high rate of recidivism in America,” according to the release.

Taylor earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence and a Master of Arts degree with honors from Drake University. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with honors from the University of Miami. He is licensed to practice law in Florida, Illinois and Washington, D.C.
