Dozens of people turned out Tuesday night for the Pine Bluff Commercial's open house. Visitors enjoyed refreshments and a presentation given by Commercial Managing Editor John Worthen.

Worthen said the idea behind the event was to let people know that The Commercial is the community's newspaper.

“We had a wonderful turnout, and I was very pleased with the amount of engagement the crowd had in the form of questions and suggestions about our coverage,” Worthen said. “We are in the process of looking at that list and will hopefully begin implementing some of those in the very near future.”

One of the suggestions included covering more events involving students, such as spelling bees.

Worthen said that due to the short staffing of the Commercial newsroom, those with news items and photos can e-mail them to if a reporter is unavailable to cover an event.

“We tell people that it's not because we don't want to be there, it's just that we don't have enough people to cover everything,” Worthen said. “We are happy to look at news items that are submitted to us for publication.”

Worthen said he would like to make the open house an annual event.

“We enjoyed having fellowship with the community,” Worthen said. “Everyone who attended had a good time, and we really feel like we came away with some positive things we can consider as we continue to grow and improve our publication. Again, we want to thank everyone for attending.”
