The Southeast Arkansas Community Mass Choir recently presented $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors, Jalyiah K. Burton of Dollarway High School and Timothy U. Clark Jr., of Pine Bluff High Schoo.
The first annual scholarship is named after the late Brenda Diane Waters Lusk, former director and co-founder of the choir. The choir’s mission is to provide assistance to families in need through the ministry of music and financial contributions.
“Through our scholarship program, the Southeast Arkansas Community Mass Choir works to support students who are focused on achieving career goals through higher education,” according to a news release.
To be eligible for the scholarships, the applicant had to live in or be a nativeor descendent of Altheimer, Sherrill, Wabbaseka, Tucker, Plum Bayou, Pastoria, or Wright. They also had to show proof of enrollment in a full-time accredited college or university or a two-year technical institute in the summer or fall semester immediately following their high school graduation.
In evaluating each application, the scholarship committee also considered service and participation in school activities, community involvement and scholastic merit.
All funds for the scholarships were provided by monetary gifts from individuals and church groups to The Brenda Dianne Waters Lusk Scholarship Fund, according to the release.
Donations for future scholarships will be accepted any time throughout the year. Details: Zola Hudson, firstname.lastname@example.org .
