Pine Bluff police are in the early stages of an investigation into the shooting deaths of two men Thursday afternoon.

According to police, both the victims were 17 years old. Pine Bluff Police Lt. David De Foor said detectives cannot confirm that the deaths of the two are related but do report that there is a good possibility that they were.

The investigation began at about 3:36 p.m. Thursday when police were sent to the area of 25th Avenue and Orange Street in response to a report of gunshots in the area. As officers searched that area, several people in a car arrived at the emergency room at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Two males had been shot and while one of them had what was described as non-life threatening injuries, the second had more severe wounds and was taken to surgery.

De Foor said when the gunshot victims arrived at the hospital, “there was a lot of emotion and a disturbance. Officers quickly quelled the disturbance and took the other occupants of the car to the detective office to be interviewed, with the exception of one male who ran from the hospital.”

According to the press release, the hospital went on lockdown because of the confusion in the emergency room waiting room but the lockdown was quickly released.

“Despite the typically inaccurate reports on social media, there was never an active shooter or any shots fired at JRMC,” De Foor said.

Officers went back to the area of 25th Avenue and Orange Street looking for a crime scene and while searching the area, found a car in the ditch at 24th Avenue and Fir Street. The car was occupied by one male who was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple gunshots.

The male at the hospital who went into surgery was pronounced dead at about 5:30 p.m.

The two deaths bring to eight the number of homicides in Pine Bluff so far this year. Through the first six months of 2017, 13 homicides had been reported.'
