General Electric recently granted summer and fall internships to 10 students at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. They all are majoring in industrial technology management and applied engineering, according to a news release.
At the end of May, the following begin working: Terrae Jenkins (senior), Osaye Maynie (junior) and Rodterion Scott (junior) at GE Global Operations Division at Houston, Texas; Oshaonia Hicks (sophomore) will be located at Billerica, Massachusetts; Christian Broughton (sophomore), Horace Jones (sophomore), Alvin Jordan O’Guinn (sophomore), and Daniel Ryles (sophomore) are located at the GE Transportation Division at Fort Worth, Texas.
For the fall semester, the following students will begin a Cooperative Education experience: Devontae Brown (freshman) will be located at GE Aviation (at a location to be determined); and Edwin Newton (junior) will be located at Jacksonville, Fla., at Baker Hughes, also a GE company and an international industrial service company, one of the world’s largest oil field services companies, according to the release.
“At GE, students from diverse backgrounds work together to solve real-world challenges, sometimes spurring innovations that change the way we they business. A summer internship or Cooperative Education experience provides an opportunity for students to integrate classroom theory into actual work experience,” according to the release.
Students will also have a chance to compete for permanent careers upon graduation.
The UAPB students were able to connect with GE during on-campus interviews and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Conference at Pittsburgh, Pa.
Tracy Knowlton, assistant director for Cooperative Education and Internships, represented the UAPB Office of Career Services at the conference. Knowlton works with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students to assist them with obtaining summer internships and Cooperative Education experiences.
Services provided by the Office of Career Services include: resume critiques, a four year plan for success, the job search and interview processes, mock interviews and most assisting students with developing the soft skills employers look for in new hires.
Students seeking a summer internship, Cooperative Education or permanent position should contact the Office of Career Services by visiting UAPB Caldwell Hall, Suite 202, or calling 870-575-8461.
