The Army Corps of Engineers will reopen Sheppard Island Park, adjacent to Emmett Sanders Lock and Dam near Pine Bluff, Thursday, June 28, one day prior to the start of the Simmons Bank Big Bass Bonanza of Arkansas.

The bass tournament will be held along the Arkansas River Friday, June 29, through Sunday, July 1.

Sheppard Island Park has been closed to the public since May 9 allowing contractors to remove sand and debris deposited in the park during the 2015 and 2016 floods, according to a news release.

“As of now, heavy equipment and dump truck use has been greatly reduced lowering safety concerns and allowing public access. Some sand and debris remains, however and contractors will resume work on July 2, but the park will remain open because of the reduced safety concerns. Visitors should expect to see heavy equipment in the park for the next two to three weeks as contractors finish the project,” according to the release.

Officials from the Army Corps of Engineers McClellan-Kerr Project - Pine Bluff Site Office regret any inconvenience the work may cause.
