Pine Bluff Northern defeated Crossett 7-5 during the first game of a doubleheader Monday night in the championship round of the Jr. Babe Ruth State Tournament at historic Taylor Field in Pine Bluff.
Due to press deadlines, details of that game and the second game of the doubleheader will not appear in this edition.
On Sunday, Pine Bluff used a huge first inning to take care of Camden by a score of 6-2 to advance to Monday's championship game.
In the first inning Sunday against Camden, David Carroll was hit by a pitch to reach base, and Randy Little Jr. later drove him in.
Shauwn Howell reached base on a fielder’s choice and also advanced the runner before Cason Blunt tripled to score both runs to add to Pine Bluff’s lead.
Zion Hill sacrificed a run on a flyout to score Blunt to give Northern a 4-0 lead over Camden after one inning.
Later in the third inning, Blunt singled, and Jacoby Bates sacrificed a fly ball to score the run. Blunt later scored to put Pine Bluff ahead 6-0.
Camden scored two runs in the final two innings, but Pine Bluff prevailed.
For Pine Bluff, Little threw four innings allowing one hit with seven strikeouts. Josh Howard relieved Little to close the game, allowing two hits with three strikeouts.
Austin Job allowed four hits while striking out four batters in the loss for Camden.
Blunt led Pine Bluff with two hits and two RBI’s. Martavius Thompson had one hit and one RBI for Camden.
In the semifinals of the winner’s bracket on Sunday, Pine Bluff Northern fell short 3-2 against Crossett, leading to their game against Camden for a win-or-go-home showdown.
In the first inning, David Carroll reached base on a walk and Howell grounded to later score the run to give Pine Bluff an early 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Crossett would score two runs on a pass ball and an RBI by Jack Rice to take a 2-1 lead over Pine Bluff.
Pine Bluff would tie the game in the same inning with a bases-loaded walk to score a run to knot the game up at 2-2.
However, in the fifth inning, Brock Wright singled in a run to take the lead that would later earn Crossett a victory over Pine Bluff.
For Northern, Howell pitched 4.1 innings allowing two hits while striking out four batters. Little relieved Howell, allowing one hit while striking out four batters.
Zeke Hopper earned the win for Crossett, allowing 5 hits with two strikeouts.
Zion Hill led Pine Bluff at the plate with a triple and a single.
For Crossett, Rice and Wright both had one hit and one RBI.
