An armed suspect was killed Friday night after pointing a gun at Pine Bluff police officers.
Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley identified the man as Danny Lee, 35, who was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Eric Belcher at 9:06 p.m. The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body; Kelley said the body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office at Little Rock Saturday for an autopsy.
According to a press release from the Arkansas State Police, who were called in to investigate the shooting, officers were sent to the area of West Roane Avenue on the north side of the city near the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in response to a reported disturbance. When they arrived in the area, they encountered Lee outside a house at 1522 N Willow St. brandishing a gun.
The UAPB campus was locked down during the incident.
Initial statements made to State Police Special Agents indicated that the PBPD attempted to take Lee into custody, but he raised a gun and pointed it at the officers, who fired their weapons and struck him multiple times.
No officers were injured in the incident, the release said. The officers involved were not identified.
Police Department policy calls for officers who are involved in shooting incidents to be placed on administrative leave with pay pending the conclusion of both the state police investigation and an internal investigation to determine if department policies were followed.
The results of the state police investigation will be forwarded to Prosecuting Attorney S. Kyle Hunter to consider whether the use of deadly force was justified under Arkansas law.
