Joy Matthews, chief executive officer of The HBCU Kid™, kicked off an inaugural summer college tour with area youth visiting historically black colleges and universities (HBCU).

Matthews, a graduate of an HBCU, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, took rising 5th–8th grade students from Pine Bluff and Little Rock to Birmingham, Ala., and Atlanta, Ga., according to a news release.

They visited Miles College, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College.

“During the tour, students were informed of necessary preparations they needed to make before college, what expectations they should have during college and what type of career opportunities they would have available to them after college,” according to the release.

The summer 2019 college tour will be announced later this year.

“The mission of the HBCU Kid™ is to educate, uplift, and expose the past, present, and future significance of historically black colleges and universities, starting with our youth,” according to the release.
