The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff will host two ceremonies this week. UAPB will celebrate the Simmons Bank Field open house and the groundbreaking of the Simmons Bank Pavilion at the Torii Hunter Baseball and Softball Complex.
Wednesday, Aug. 29 — From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the UAPB Department of Athletics will host an open house and ribbon-cutting for Simmons Bank Field, the newly renovated home of the Golden Lions. Parking will be available and entry at Gate One, according to a news release.
This event is free and open to the public. Guests may take photos on the field afterward. UAPB and UA System leadership, Simmons Bank executives, the Golden Lions football team, the Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South (band), Golden Girls dance team, and cheer squads will welcome the community into the stadium and officially cut the ribbon with assistance of the Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Friday, Aug. 31 — At 11 a.m., UAPB will break ground for the Simmons Bank Pavilion at the Torii Hunter Baseball and Softball Complex. Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Torii Hunter, a Pine Bluff native and retired professional baseball player, will both give remarks. The facility will include a press box and concession stand, according to the release.

Participating officials at the ceremonies include UAPB Chancellor Laurence B. Alexander; George A. Makris Jr., Simmons First National Corp. chairman and chief executive officer; UAPB Head Football Coach Cedric Thomas, UAPB Head Baseball Coach Carlos James, Gov. Asa Hutchinson, UA System president Donald R. Bobbitt, UA System Board of Trustees, Torii Hunter, MLB All-Star; Bill Jones, Sissy’s Log Cabin president; and members of the Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce, according to the news release.
