Southeast Arkansas College is opening its doors to the public for “Bring A Friend to SEARK Day” between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5.

Guests are encouraged to bring friends and family members to SEARK, 1900 Hazel St., for campus tours, free treats and a chance to win a college tuition waiver, according to a news release.

“Bring a Friend to SEARK Day” will feature a variety of activities as well as free shaved ice from Kona Ice. SEARK will also provide a $5 voucher to each registered guest to redeem toward their purchase at Blue Pig BBQ, which will be on site serving lunch items.

Radio stations 99.3 The BEAT and 104.5 KTRN will broadcast live from the SEARK campus.

SEARK faculty and staff will be available to help with questions and services, including assistance with the admissions process and completion of the FAFSA application for financial aid, as well as providing information about SEARK’s technical and academic programs, degrees, and certificates, according to the release.

For all registered attendees, SEARK will waive the fee for the Accuplacer test, an assessment to determine one’s skills in reading, writing and math, according to

Accuplacer testing will be available on the day of the event, or guests can use the waiver form — included with each registration packet — to complete the test at a later date. Registration will be held at the time of the event in front of the Welcome Center on the east side of campus off of Hazel Street.

SEARK staff will also be available to assist those interested in completing their high school equivalency exam or GED.

Additionally, SEARK will hold a drawing for free college tuition.

Deb Pyland, director of recruitment and retention, said “individuals who apply for admission to SEARK at the event will be entered in a drawing for a 3-credit hour tuition waiver, a value of $389. The waiver can be used toward the Fall 2nd 8-week session which begins Oct. 15, or towards the Spring 2019 semester, which will begin Jan. 14.”

Pyland wanted to create “Bring a Friend to SEARK Day” to allow the community to see first hand “all the great things happening at SEARK,” according to the release.

“Pyland also said she hopes that ‘Bring a Friend to SEARK Day’ will give people who may be considering college the opportunity to explore campus, ask questions and discover how easy it is to start earning a college degree,” according to the release.

A long-time resident of Jefferson County, Pyland has organized and led student success initiatives at SEARK for the past 12 years, including a recently launched Career Closet that provides free professional clothing to SEARK students for job interviews.
