Pine Bluff police are continuing their investigation into the Saturday morning shooting death of a man, but as of Monday afternoon, they had no suspects in custody.
The victim, identified as Ashton Jackson, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner April Davis at 5:44 a.m. The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds. Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley said the body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office Saturday for an autopsy.
This was the sixth homicide of the year in Pine Bluff. Through the first three months of 2018, three homicides had been reported.
According to a report from Officer Shamario Johnson, who was the first officer on the scene, police dispatchers initially reported gunshots in the area of 5th Avenue and Hemlock Street. It was then reported that there was a gunshot victim at the Valero Gas Station on Blake Street. A third report said that a female had called and said that they were on the Martha Mitchell Expressway near Blake Street in a black car.
Johnson said in his report that as he was driving west on the Expressway toward Blake Street, he saw a black Jeep stopped in the middle of the roadway with the front driver’s and passenger doors open. A female was by the vehicle screaming. As Johnson approached the rear driver’s side door, he reported seeing a man, later identified as Jackson, slumped over and not responsive.
“At that time, I could see that Mr. Jackson had a gunshot wound to the upper torso,” Johnson said in his report.
He also reported that a silver Colt .45-caliber handgun with a brown handle was found under the driver’s seat; a check with the Arkansas Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center databases showed that the gun had not been reported stolen.
