In conjunction with the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, Economics Arkansas is offering a summer workshop for PreK-12 teachers at locations around the state titled Cooking Matters: Healthy Meals on a Budget.

A workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, at the Coretta Scott King Center in Pine Bluff, according to a news release.

Because of a grant from the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas, Economics Arkansas and the Alliance will use Cooking Matters programming as a tool for PreK-12 teachers in financial literacy instruction.

Economics Arkansas staff and the Cooking Matters team will conduct six workshops around the state to teach smart budgeting and decision-making skills, as well as cooking techniques to create low-cost, yet healthy and nutritious meals.

“Participating teachers will be able to not only apply this knowledge for personal use, but also become empowered to serve as connectors to counselors or parental engagement coordinators to facilitate the Cooking Matters series within entire communities. The project aims to create a healthier, financially savvy population,” according to the release.

“The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance is an implementation partner for Cooking Matters, a national program that is helping end hunger by inspiring families to make healthy, affordable food choices.

“The programs teach parents and caregivers with limited food budgets to shop for and cook healthy meals. Cooking Matters is an evidence-based nutrition education program that teaches under-resourced adults and teens how to shop for nutritious food and prepare meals on limited food budgets. Bulk purchasing, reading nutrition labels and comparative pricing in addition to cooking skills make Cooking Matters a valuable asset to under-resourced Arkansans,” according to the release.

The hands-on workshop is targeted for 20 teachers each. Participants will receive six hours of professional development, lunch, ready-to-use resources and a $50 stipend.

The workshops will be held Tuesday, June 4, Plumerville; Wednesday, June 5, Mountain Home; Thursday, June 6, Manila; Wednesday, June 19, Pine Bluff; Thursday, June 20, Camden; Friday, July 19, Little Rock.
