The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas presents works from young artists with the 2019 annual Pine Bluff High School Art Exhibition. The exhibition opened with a free public reception May 2. The show will be on view at the center through July 27.
“ASC has hosted this exhibition for over 40 years,” ASC Executive Director Dr. Rachel Miller said in remarks during the reception. “And in the last two years, I have been very fortunate to watch the progression of the students’ artwork. Each year, their show is amazing.”
PBHS art teacher Shalisha Thomas worked with the students and curated the exhibition. The 15 artists in the exhibition are: Edem Ammamoo, Phillip Austin, Zariaeah Blake, Kaniyah Briggs, E’Leecia Clark, Tyrah Elerby, Tykera Glover, Symfoni Green, Jason Sanders, O’keylan Seahorn, Ashia Shelton, Phyantasia Tanner, Justin Thomasson, Noelani Williams and Ro Willis.
“The artwork is absolutely beautiful,” Thomas said. “It was amazing to see the beginning stages of the journey of the artwork and how everything came together. I’m amazed by how some of my students were reluctant at first to even create and they ended up with some good pieces. I feel very blessed to be able to work with them on a daily basis.”
The exhibition is sponsored by Pine Bluff Sand & Gravel Co. The exhibition is on view in the International Paper Gallery through Saturday, July 27.
“The artwork shows their own unique personalities and it’s something they’re proud of and that made me feel good, knowing that some of them weren’t very open to creating it,” Thomas said. “And also, the more advanced artists in the group like Justin [Thomasson] and Ashia [Shelton], they just never cease to amaze me. Their artwork is absolutely amazing.”
The Arts & Science Center, 701 S. Main St. at Pine Bluff, is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Gallery admission is free. Support for ASC is provided in part by the Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, and the National Endowment for the Arts. ASC is a member of the Discovery Network, a statewide program of the Museum of Discovery.
