A body that was found inside a house on South Larch Street that had burned is being investigated as a homicide.
Police Chief Kelvin Sergeant told members of the City Council's Public Safety Committee Wednesday that a preliminary report from the State Medical Examiner's Office resulted in the death being classified as a homicide. He declined to discuss the specific cause of the death.
The victim was identified as Chris Jones, 36, who was pronounced dead by Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley after firefighters found the body while extinguishing the blaze which destroyed the house at 110 S. Larch St. Friday. Sergeant said the fire was an arson.
Police said in a press release that no suspect information was available, adding that the investigation is in its early stages.
This was the 15th homicide inside the city limits of Pine Bluff so far this year. Through the first five months of 2018, six homicides had been reported in the city.
