Indigo Blue Coffeehouse, 212 W. Barraque St., will host an event featuring local artists Markeith Woods and Rashawn Penister and spoken word artist/poet Gensu The Blerd Philosopher.

The event will be held from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3.

Woods and Rashawn Penister are two well-known artists from the community who will bring some of their newest art pieces to an exhibit and reception, according to a news release.

“Each have their own different style of painting. Woods’ work is mostly figural and focuses on Black historical leaders while Penister’s work is more abstract,” according to the release.

The guest poet is Gensu The Blerd Philosopher, who considers himself to be a “traveling spoken word artist, poet, songwriter, author, and street performer,” according to the release.

Maryann Lee, the owner of Indigo Blue, said she is excited to have the artists and the poet at this event.

“She mentioned that both Markeith Woods and Rashawn Penister are teachers at Pine Bluff elementary schools as well as graduates of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Woods just recently received a full scholarship in a Masters’ program at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Penister, who loves teaching young minds, will be returning to the classroom this fall,” according to the release.

The event is open to the public and the artwork will be available for purchase.

“Lee said that the audience can expect a creative and exciting performance at this event,” according to the release.
