The Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Public Library System announced its programs for August and September.


Main Library programs —


Genie Massey – author book signing, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, on the second floor of the main library.


“Murdered Without Cause” is a true-crime story regarding the murder of Massey’s aunt, Tresia Jester, at the hands of an armed gang at a filling station in Pine Bluff on March 21, 1992. A Little Rock resident and two companions attempted to steal a BMW from Jester, who was parked by a pay telephone at a service station, according to a news release. As Jester tried to leave in the car, the man fired a sawed-off shotgun and killed her. The book was written to educate and support survivors of victims of homicide and domestic violence who are devastated with grief from losing a loved one. Her book shares the ripple effects and impacts that Massey and her family endured following the death of her aunt.


Computers 101 — 1–3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, on the second floor of the main library.


“Come join us and as we learn the basic use of computers. We will discuss how to use Microsoft Word, as well as how to use popular social media platforms,” according to the release.


Movies at the Library — 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Main Library Theater.


Author Book Signing – Heather Hummel (H.K. Hummel) — 4–5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, on the second floor of the main library.


“H.K. Hummel is the author of Lessons in Breathing Underwater (Sundress Publications, 2019), and the co-author of Short-Form Creative Writing: A Writer’s Guide and Anthology (Bloomsbury, 2018). She is an Assistant Professor of creative writing at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock,” according to the release.


Quilting Classes — 1–3 p.m. Mondays, Aug. 19, and 26; and Sept. 9, 16, 23, and 30, on the second floor of the main library.


Watermelon Planter Pots — 4–5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, on the second floor of the main library. “We will be decorating small terracotta planter pots to look like watermelons. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on,” according to the release.


Library Book Club — 5–5:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, on the second floor of the main library. The library will be starting a book club at this event. Participants will be discussing what books members would like to read. “So, come join us. Light refreshments will be served.”


Movies at the Library — 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, Main Library Theater.


Craft Class – Making Geodes from Hot Glue Sticks! 4–5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, on the second floor of the main library. “Come join us as we learn how to make funky ‘crystal’ geodes using hot glue sticks, paint, and glitter.”


Library Book Club — 4–5:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, on the second floor of the main library. This is the second meeting of the library book club. “Come join us as we discuss a great book.”


Book Bingo — 4–5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, on the second floor of the main library. “We will be playing bingo for books. There will be a raffle for a $15 Walmart gift card. Light refreshments will be served.”


Resume Writing Workshop — 1–3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, on the second floor of the main library. “Come learn how to write a resume and cover letter.”


Redfield Branch Library —


Redfield Branch Library will be closing Aug. 26 for a scheduled remodeling. There will be arts and crafts daily up until the closing date.


White Hall Branch Library —


White Hall Branch Library will be closing Sept. 9 for a scheduled remodeling. Until then, programs will include:


Toddler Time — 10 a.m. Thursdays, Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22 and Sept. 12, 19, and 26. (In August, they will meet in the library and in September, they will meet at the Scout Hut in the White Hall Park.)


Elementary and Adult Programs will be paused until after the renovations are completed.


Other branches —


Altheimer Branch Library is closed for remodeling. Watson Chapel Library will close Aug. 5 for packing of books in order to be ready for construction beginning mid-August, according to the release.
