Arkansas Gospel Music Heritage Month (AGMHM) will be observed in September.
The AGMHM Kickoff takes place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept, 14, at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions Stadium.
“You don’t want to miss UAPB’s ‘Marching Musical Machine of the Mid South’,” a spokesman said in a news release.
The grand finale is set for 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Old St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 4512 Ohio St. The event serves as the culmination of AGMHM in a formal, awards style gala.
“The grand finale has been designed to acknowledge the contributions of Arkansas natives, while furthering awareness of the mainstream role Gospel music plays in the state of Arkansas,” according to the spokesman.
The community is urged to participate in events throughout September.
“Gospel singers, let’s represent Gospel music in a major way as we kick off the festivities,” the spokesman said.
The mission of AGMHM is to “empower faith-based communities to cross racial, ethnic, religious and geographical boundaries in gospel music and emerge as one body,” the spokesman said.
Congress recognized September as Gospel Music Heritage Month, which began in June 2008. On Feb. 16, 2011, the Arkansas Legislature voted unanimously to recognize the month as “Arkansas Gospel Music Heritage Month.”
