Watson Chapel held off a late charge to defeat Pine Bluff

Watson Chapel scored on its first possession and never trailed in the game as they defeated the Pine Bluff Zebras Friday night 39-33. Devin Curry got the Wildcats on the board 2:16 into the game on a 10-yard run to put the ‘Cats up 7-0. Curry would score again to put Chapel up 13-0 after the missed PAT on a one-yard quarterback sneak.

Both teams would trade punts and a fumble each before Zebra senior quarterback Tyler Foots would score on a one-yard run of his own to draw the Z’s to within 13-7 after the Ethan White extra-point. Watson Chapel would answer on its ensuing drive when Curry found senior wide receiver Kevin Compton for a five-yard scoring pass. The missed PAT left the score 19-7 at the half.

Pine Bluff would get the ball to start the second half, but failed to move the ball far before turning it over on downs. Curry would get his bell rung on the Wildcats first drive in the third quarter, so Ricky Farver would take over at quarterback. Farver would find Compton on a 29-yard touchdown pass to give Chapel its largest lead of the game at 26-7 after the Abzu Nahshal extra-point. 

Elisha Taylor would close the gap on the very next offensive pl;ay for the Zebras on a 51-yard burst up the middle to close to within 26-14. Farver wasn’t finished as he found Compton once again on the next drive for a 27-yard touchdown. The point-after failed, but Chapel was up 33-14. Foots would get Pine Bluff (0-2) to within 33-20 with a 13-yard pass to Xavier Turner early in the fourth quarter. 

The Zebras would get the onside kick and score on the next play on a 41-yard pass again to Turner. Again, the two-point conversion would fail to leave the score at 33-26.

Watson Chapel (2-1) answered the call on their next drive to go up 39-26 on a Farver five-yard run around left end. Pine Bluff would get another score to pull to within 39-33 after the PAT when Foots found Turner once again on a fourth down, 51-yard strike. The Wildcats recovered the ensuing onside kick, moved the chains one time, and the Zebras could not stop the clock.

Curry finished the game 7 of 10 passing for 80 yards and a score while adding 113 yards on the ground. His counterpart, Foots, finished 8 of 20 for 173 yards and three touchdowns. Elisha Taylor led all rushers with 170 on 18 carries.  

Pine Bluff will travel next week to take on Springdale Har-ber in their final non-conference game of the year. That game can be heard locally on 99.3, the Beat, beginning with the pregame at 6:30. Watson Chapel will have an open week next Friday before opening conference play on the road as they take on the Little Rock Christian Warriors on September 27.
