The McGehee School District recently received a $2,717 Arkansas Humanities Council Grant.

The grant will be used to support reading, writing and arts integration for McGehee Elementary school teachers and students participating in John H. Johnson Day at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in Arkansas City at the John H. Johnson Museum and Educational Center, according to a news release.

The McGehee grant will provide transportation for a field trip to the Johnson museum; to purchase books by Margena A. Christian, author of Empire: The House That John H. Johnson Built; and buy art supplies and related costs, according to the release.

A second celebration will be held Nov. 1 at 5:30 p.m. in Little Rock at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center. The events are free to attend.

Johnson, who died in 2005, was born in Arkansas City in 1918. Johnson published Ebony and Jet Magazines, and was the founder, publisher, chairman and CEO of Johnson Publishing Co. Details:
