On April 24, 2020 around 3:00 p.m., officers of the Pine Bluff Police Department responded to gunshots in the area of 16th Avenue and Plum Street.

As the Pine Bluff Commercial was in production Friday afternoon for Saturday's print edition, the following press release was issued by the Pine Bluff Police Department:

"On April 24, 2020 around 3:00 p.m., officers of the Pine Bluff Police Department responded to gunshots in the area of 16th Avenue and Plum Street.  Upon arrival, officers found 34-year-old Emmanuel Foster lying on the ground. He was pronounced dead on the scene with apparent gunshot wounds.  37-year-old Jason Anderson was transported to Jefferson Regional Medical Center with serious injuries consistent with gunshot wounds."

Early Friday evening, a second press release from the Pine Bluff Police Department said:

"33-year-old Deric Smith and 23-year-old Lemiesha Toney have been booked into the Jefferson County jail for Capital Murder and Battery 1st Degree.  This is the 6th homicide for the city."
