Softball season began with two home losses for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
The Lady Lions fell 5-3 and 10-0 to Saint Louis University in a Friday doubleheader at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.
UAPB (0-2) scored first in the opening game, but one bad defensive inning cost the Lady Lions.
Saint Louis (2-0) dominated the second game, winning in five innings via the run rule.
UAPB freshman Kayla Adams (0-1) took the game one loss in her collegiate debut, a five-inning outing. The Tulsa native allowed 2 earned runs on 8 hits while striking out 6 batters. She didn't issue a walk.
Amari Broughton led the Lady Lions' offense in game one, hitting 3-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI. Her solo home run in the bottom of the second inning gave UAPB an early 1-0 lead. SLU took the lead with a four-run top of the fifth and led the rest of the game.
Jada Carhee pinch hit for UAPB in the bottom of the fifth and hit a 2-RBI double to cut it to 4-3, but UAPB couldn't tie the game. SLU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
SLU starter Taylor Hochman (1-0) earned the win after a 6-inning outing. She allowed 3 runs on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts and one walk. Lily Strand picked up a 1-inning save, allowing 1 hit with 1 strikeout.
The Game 2 loss went to UAPB sophomore Danika Bryant (0-1), who allowed 3 earned runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings of work. She struck out one hitter and walked six. Four UAPB errors during her outing led to 4 unearned runs. Strand (1-0) picked up the shutout win for SLU.
The Billikens took a 2-0 lead in the second inning before blowing it open with a 5-run third. SLU scored 3 in the fifth, then completed the shutout in the bottom of the fifth to earn the sweep.
UAPB designated player Shalin Charles hit 2-for-2. No other Lady Lion got a hit. SLU's Sydney Ross led the Billikens with 3 RBIs on 2-of-3 hitting.
UAPB returns to action today with a home doubleheader against Quinnipiac University.
