A complete game by a freshman pitcher powered the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to its first series win of the season.

The UAPB softball team defeated Western Illinois 4-1 in Monday's series finale at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex in Pine Bluff.

UAPB (2-3) wins the series after splitting the first two games in a Sunday doubleheader. The Lady Lions won the opener 3-2 before losing the second game 9-5.

Freshman pitcher Kayla Adams (2-1) earned the win in game three just as she had done in game one. In seven innings, she allowed 1 run on three hits. She finished with seven strikeouts without walking a batter.

She pitched 14 total innings in two days and allowed two total earned runs.

After Adams retired Western Illinois (1-6) in order in the top of the first, the Lady Lions immediately gave her run support with a 3-run bottom of the first. Samaria Jackson put UAPB up 1-0 with an RBI single. Amari Broughton then reached on an error which scored two more runs.

UAPB added another unearned run in the fourth. WIU didn't score on Adams until the top of the seventh inning with two outs when Bella Alvarez hit an RBI single. Adams struck out the next hitter to end the series.
