SEARCY – Greenwood showed why it has won back-to-back state championships in girls basketball Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs beat Sheridan 85-24 in the first round of the 5A state tournament at Searcy High School.

Greenwood (25-4) never trailed. Senior guard Anna Trusty led the Lady Bulldogs with 24 points. Sophomore guard Kylah Pearcy scored 13, senior Brooklyn Woolsey scored 12, and junior Pate Jones added 10.

Sheridan (21-9) got 10 points from sophomore Lilly Reid and 6 from senior Kayden Porter.

Greenwood's full court press caused the Lady Jackets problems from the start as the Lady Bulldogs created numerous turnovers. They also got to the free throw line with ease and went 10 of 14 from the line in the first half.

Pearcy gave Lady Bulldogs the lead 9 seconds into the game with a pair of free throws. Sheridan hung around for the first 4 minutes, with Wilson hitting a 3-pointer to cut Greenwood's lead to 4-3.

Goodman drew a foul and hit two free throws for Sheridan to make Greenwood's lead 11-7 with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter. Sheridan didn't score again in the first and made just one shot in the second quarter, a 3-pointer by Reid with 3:39 remaining until halftime.

In between those scores, Greenwood went on a 38-0 run, and the Lady Bulldogs finished the half on a 13-0 run to lead 62-10 at the break.

Greenwood kept the starters in the game for the first couple minutes of the second half before pulling them. Sheridan had a 9-0 run late in the third quarter with 4 points from Porter and a 3-pointer from senior Marissa Nevens.

Both teams used reserves in the fourth quarter with a running clock. Greenwood outscored Sheridan 10-0 in the final quarter.

Greenwood will face the winner of Wednesday's game between Searcy and Beebe in the second round Friday.
