SEARK defeated by NW Mississippi in softball twin bill


Northwest Mississippi Community College scored a dozen runs twice against Southeast Arkansas College in a softball doubleheader Tuesday at the Torii Hunter Complex.

Northwest Mississippi won the first game 12-4 and the second 12-1, enforcing the 5-inning mercy rule both times with the help of big innings.

The Rangers scored 8 runs in the second inning of the first game and led 10-0 before SEARK (4-13) plated a pair of runs in the fourth. Northwest had 17 hits to SEARK's 7, and the Sharks also committed 3 errors.

Abby Rogers hit a home run for Northwest (10-2). Haley Cummings and Chiara Olison each had 2 hits for SEARK.

Chelsea Zizzo allowed 7 earned runs on 10 hits in 2 innings. Olison scattered 2 earned runs 7 hits over the following 3 innings.

Northwest was leading a tighter Game 2, 4-1, before posting an 8-spot in the fifth. The Rangers totaled 13 hits to the Sharks' 4, and SEARK also committed 2 errors.

SEARK had no multiple hitters. Ashlyn Powell struck out 3 and allowed 8 earned runs in all 5 innings of the loss.

Kara Johnson (3 RBI), Sommer Tyes (2 RBI) and Rogers each had 2 runs for Northwest. Kaylee Owens and Johnson homered.

Morgen Brewton threw 9 strikeouts in the win.

The losses closed an 0-6 homestand for SEARK. The Sharks have given up an average of 14.5 runs per game and scored 1.33 runs during the slide.

The Sharks will return to action Saturday at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Miss.
