UAPB softball team is winner

Early runs and quality pitching allowed the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team to claim Friday's series opener.

The Lady Lions defeated Grambling State 4-1 at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex in Pine Bluff.

UAPB (13-12, 4-2 SWAC) led 4-0 after the second inning.

Third baseman Amari Broughton and catcher Kaitlyn Neely hit RBI singles in the bottom of the first. In the second, Broughton reached on an error which allowed second baseman Tyrah Elerby and rightfielder Jasmine Carlson to score unearned runs.

The Lady Lions outhit the Lady Tigers 7-4, led by Elerby. She hit 2 for 2 with a walk and 2 runs. No Grambling player had more than one hit.

Grambling (10-19, 2-7) scored its only run in the top of the sixth when pinch hitter Sherrell Matthew was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

UAPB freshman starter Kayla Adams (9-4) went the distance, striking out 16 hitters with one walk. She allowed 1 run on four hits.

Dacia Richard (4-5) pitched six innings for Grambling. She struck out nine hitters with two walks and allowed 2 earned runs on seven hits.

The teams will finish their weekend series with a doubleheader today beginning at 1 p.m. UAPB is seeking its second-straight series win and has won seven of its past eight games.
