Pine Bluff police have begun an investigation into the shooting death of a man early Friday morning.

Claudell Turner, 57, was pronounced dead at 12:59 a.m. by Deputy Coroner Phillip Tallent, according to Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley.

The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds. The body will be sent to the State Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy.

Police Lt. David Price said Turner was found inside a vehicle at the intersection of West 12th Avenue and Cherry Street after officers responded to a reported injury accident. When officers arrived, they found that the vehicle had struck a fire hydrant and utility pole on the northeast corner of the intersection.

"When officers approached the vehicle, the officers discovered that the black male appeared to have been shot and still alive," Price said in the press release. "The male was not able to communicate with the officers and an officer performed CPR until the ambulance arrived, when the male’s condition deteriorated."

Price said no motive for the shooting has been established and there have been no arrests in the case.

This was the 15th homicide reported in the city of Pine Bluff so far this year. Last year, 10 homicides had been reported in Pine Bluff through the end of October.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked contact the detective division at 730-2090 or the dispatch center at 541-5300. All calls will be kept confidential.
