LITTLE ROCK — U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack issued disaster declarations Wednesday for farmers in two eastern Arkansas counties where crops were damaged by high winds and hail on Oct. 7.


Responding to requests from Gov. Mike Beebe, Vilsack issued primary disaster declarations for Craighead and Mississippi counties, according to a news release from the state Department of Agriculture. Vilsack also named Crittenden, Greene, Jackson, Lawrence and Poinsett counties as contiguous disaster counties.


Farmers in the counties whose crops were affected by the severe weather can apply at their local Farm Service Agency office for federal aid.
