Thomas Leon Strode, 83, of Pine Bluff passed away on Tuesday, December 4th 2018, comforted by the presence of his family. He was born on March 4th, 1935 in Gillette, AR to the late Thomas Joseph Strode and Norah Richardson Strode. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello, earning an undergraduate degree in Mathematics. He proudly served in the United States Army National Guard and answered the call to active service during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
In the years following graduation Leon found work teaching high school mathematics, serving as a football coach, and for a time, even serving as a school administrator. Leon’s love for the Arkansas outdoors eventually lead to a lifetime career as a land surveyor. He took great pride in being a Registered Land Surveyor, a title which he was one of the first in the state to hold. Over the years he used his talents to serve his community by sitting on the Pine Bluff Planning Commission. He was further elected to serve as the Jefferson County Surveyor. His passion for his profession lead to the discovery of several Arkansas landmarks, and the publishing of those discoveries in the pages of several Arkansas newspapers. Leon Strode was a man who truly loved his work and he never retired.
Leon loved the outdoors. His work took him far into the woods and out into the fields. Often, during the course of his day he would gather fallen pecans, snacking on them as he worked. He found great joy in the act of sharing his appreciation for the fruits of the land with family and friends.
It wasn’t uncommon for Leon to stop by for a visit with a gift of pecans and corn. Among his favorite hobbies were crafting wooden ducks and walking sticks. Leon loved his life, and found great meaning in times spent at the table, surrounded by family and friends, sharing a good meal. These convivial gatherings always lead to the stories that he most loved to tell. The joy and love he received, and gave, sustained and nurtured his family and friends.
Leon was preceded in death by his loving and gracious wife of 54 years, Patsy Corkill Strode in January of 2015. He is survived by their two children: Kathryn Strode Downs of Stafford, Virginia; Thomas Corkill Strode (Corky) of North Little Rock; his son-in-law Robert Griffith Downs; daughter-in-law Stephanie Nelson Strode; his one treasured grand-daughter, Emily Estelle Downs; four siblings: Joseph A. Strode of Pine Bluff; Donna Chesanek of East Longmeadow, MA; Joyce Woodson of Cabot; his sister-in-law Connie Corkill Fuller; other nieces and nephews; and the many friends he made along the way.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Wendy’s on 28th Street in Pine Bluff for the special attention they gave “Mr. Thomas.” Their kind and caring staff made his daily lunch trips a treat. They had his order memorized and started to prepare his lunch as soon as they saw his truck pull in the parking lot. It is truly the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors that kept him in Pine Bluff. With Leon, you could guarantee that where there was food, there were friends to be made and stories to be shared.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 10th at 1:30pm in the chapel of Fuller Hale-South, followed by a 2:30pm Celebration of Life. Interment will take place at Graceland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Pine Bluff Neighbor to Neighbor Program in the name of Thomas Leon Strode. Please help us share his love of food, family, and fellowship with others this holiday season. Online condolences:www.fullerfunerals.com
