Nancy Browne


Nancy Carroll Burkett Browne, of Pine Bluff was born June 25, 1944, and gained her wings on Wednesday, September 11, 2019. She was 75 years old.


She was born in Searcy, Arkansas to B.B. Burkett and Pauline Lawson Burkett. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Misty Dawn Browne Burrow; her granddaughter, Callie Renee Burrow; and her sister, Linda Burkett Miller.


Nancy leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 57 years, William P. “Billy” Browne; her daughter, Tammy Renee Browne; her nephew, Tony Aaron; and her great niece, Elisabeth Miller.


She married Billy on June 5, 1962. She was a loving wife, mother and friend. She was an avid bowler.


Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, September 16, 2019 at Salem Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Howard Loetscher officiating. Burial will be in Fitzhugh Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:00-2:00 PM Monday at the church.


Pallbearers will be Freddie Coleman, Julian Welch, Tracy Welch, Tony Miller, John Davis, Pete Smith, James Raby and Johnny Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Miller, T.R. Martin and the Glory Sunday School Class.

Shelby Conrad


Shelby Jean Conrad, 77, of Jonesboro, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019.


She is survived by her son, who she loved with all her heart, was the light of her world and her rock, Darryl Conrad (Melanie) of Jonesboro, Arkansas; grandchildren, Madison Dawson and Ryder Conrad of Jonesboro, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis T. Dye and Jesselyn Lyerly Dye; stepmother, Opal Lawless Dye.


Shelby graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1960. She lived in Pine Bluff, Arkansas until 2010 and was a devoted member of 6th Street Church of Christ. In 2010, she moved to Jonesboro to be closer to her family and was a member of Stone Street Church of Christ.


Shelby was a Breast Cancer Survivor and was very active in the Susan B. Komen Foundation. She loved attending Race for the Cure each October. Shelby was a member of the Arkansas Business Women’s Association. She enjoyed travel, beautiful clothes and jewelry.


Shelby’s love for Christ, family and friends was abundant. She was a kind individual that was loved by all that met her. She was full of laughter; her smile could light up a room. Shelby has many friends from Pine Bluff and friends that she made while living in Jonesboro. She cherished each and every one of those friendships and will be dearly missed by family and friends.


Shelby worked as a doctor’s assistant at AHEC of University of Arkansas Medical Science for 28 years before retiring.


The family wishes to thank the staff at Craighead Nursing Center. We especially want to thank Dr. Maglothin, Mallory, Nikki, Ryan and Marquita whom were truly the best at loving and taking care of her that last year of her life. We are so thankful for the special care and love she received during her short time there.


Memorial services will be Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the 6th Street Church of Christ in Pine Bluff, Arkansas with Clarence Fell officiating.

Pearl Thomas


Ms. Pearl Lean Thomas, 54, of St. Louis passed away on September 5, 2019. Funeral Service will be 12:00 noon on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at Paradise Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens by Paradise Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

Ephriam Whitman


Ephriam J. Whitman, 82, of Pine Bluff, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.


Mr. Whitman was born July 15, 1937, in Du Bois, Pennsylvania, to the late Ephriam and Pauline J. Whiteman. He was reared and received his education in Brookville, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Brookville High School. He attended many colleges including Alaska Methodist University in Anchorage, Alaska; El Paso Community College, El Paso, Texas; University of Arkansas at Little Rock in Little Rock, Arkansas; Pines Vocational-Technical School in Pine Bluff; and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.


Mr. Whitman was a United States Army veteran and served during Vietnam. He retired from the Army after 27 years of service on October 31, 1981. His last assignment was Installation Sergeant Major at the Pine Bluff Arsenal. Some of his major assignments in the military included: 1st Sgt 42nd Ordinance Det., Senior Instructor at the U. S. Army Chemical Center and School, Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) and Senior Instructor of the Chemical, Biological and Radiological School at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was also Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Operations Sergeant in Fort Richardson, Alaska and Fort Sam Houston, Texas.


He was a member of Phi Epsilon Chapter/Kappa Delta Pi and Honor Society in Education. He was on the Board of Directors of the Pine Bluff Arsenal Federal Credit Union for 30 years. He was on the Board of Directors of the American Bowling Congress for 15 years, until it was discontinued in 2005 and then was given a lifetime membership in the new membership organization, The United States Bowling Congress. He was also a member of the Arkansas State Bowling Hall of Fame and was elected to Life Member in the Pine Bluff USBC Bowling Association, The Arkansas State Bowling Association, and the Southern Bowling Congress, Inc.


Survivors include his wife Marianne Whitman, whom he married April 8, 1958, in Manheim, Germany; son, Tom Whitman of Pine Bluff; and a daughter, Margaret Whitman of Pine Bluff; brothers, Robert and Paul Whiteman.


He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eugene, Arnold and Edward Whiteman; and sisters, Margaret, Della, and Dorothy.
