Romans 8:35, 38-39: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
In the wake of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we have been faced with many challenges. From business closings to government shutdowns, our way of life has been severely impacted, globally. As a result, the world has been spontaneously thrusted into social distancing — separating ourselves from others. This is a practice implemented to stop or impede the spread of the virus. However, in the midst of these things, it is important for us to remember one thing: Nothing shall separate us from the love of God! (Romans 8:39.)
The word “separate” comes from two words in the KJV New Testament Greek Lexicon, but my focus will be on “chorizo.” It means to divide, part, put asunder, separate one’s self from, to depart, to leave a husband or wife, divorce, go away. With this definition in mind, it would read like this — nothing shall make God depart from you, or leave you, or separate Himself from you. God will never divorce you!
In Romans 8:35, Paul asks “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” In other words, who can convince Him to divorce you? Who can turn God against you? Who can make God change his mind about you? What can anyone tell God about you that He doesn’t already know? Who is powerful enough to keep God from loving you? Nothing and no one can make God divorce you! If God be for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
After Paul’s question in verse 35, he gives a laundry list of challenges. He seemingly interrogates his audience, as if to say, “Name one thing” that is terrible enough to separate us from His love or make Him divorce us. Paul appears to demand answers: Will tribulation make Him do it? Will distress or persecution make Him do it? The answer is NO! No matter what you go through, God will never divorce you!
By the time Paul makes it to verse 38, he’s testifying. His new laundry list is his own personal testimony. Paul says he is persuaded that nothing can separate us from the love of God — not death, not life, not angels, not principalities, not powers, not things present, not things to come, not height, not depth, not any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord! God’s love has already been proven and demonstrated.
Paul’s words are very timely for this challenging season. In the face of COVID-19 and social distancing, we must be mindful that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love or make Him practice social distancing from us. Today, we join the ranks with Paul, adding our own testimony and another name to the laundry list.
Is COVID-19 terrible enough to separate us from His love or make Him divorce us? The answer is still NO! Nothing Shall Separate Us from The Love of God! He will NEVER turn His back on us or walk out on us — He will NEVER leave us or forsake us — He will NEVER dessert us or abandon us — He will NEVER put us away or give up on us — He will NEVER file for a divorce or take us to divorce court — He will NEVER make us sleep on the couch or put us in the dog house. And as for you who are reading this article, GOD WILL NEVER DIVORCE YOU!
