Chapel wins consolation game

LITTLE ROCK — Watson Chapel defeated Mount Saint Mary’s 50-29 in a consolation game of the Heavenly Hoops Tournament on Saturday.

Timesha Cole led Chapel (2-1) with 16 points.

The Lady Wildcats will face Searcy on Tuesday.

Lady Lions fall in second round

JACKSON, Miss. — The Jackson State volleyball team kept its hopes of a third-straight SWAC title alive and took some revenge against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the process.

The Lady Tigers held on to beat the Lady Lions, 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 9-25, 17-25, 15-7), to eliminate UAPB from the conference tournament at Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

Senior Rachel Hornbuckle led UAPB with 12 kills in the loss.

Earlier in the day, Alabama State sent UAPB into the elimination bracket with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18) victory over the Lady Lions in the second round.

Ashlie Jones led UAPB with 11 kills and one assist. Hornbuckle and Whitney Harris had 12 kills each against ASU.

UAPB made history Saturday morning, winning its opening match of the SWAC volleyball tournament for the first time in program history.

The Lady Lions advanced to the second round of the tournament with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 27-25) win over Jackson State.

Ayanna Parker led UAPB with 12 kills, while Jones had 11 kills in the loss.


UA men 12th, women 15th at NCAA XC meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Arkansas men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in 12th and 15th place, respectively, in the NCAA Championships at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course.

Junior Stanley Kebenei earned All-America honors after finishing sixth in the men’s race. For the women, sophomore Dominique Scott earned All-America honors thanks to a 28th place finish.
